Published: 11 June 2014

A group of second year Business Management students travelled to Artesis Plantijn University in Antwerp to take part in a Europe-wide project.

The Intensive Programme, sponsored by the European Commission, aims to bring together students and teaching staff from higher education institutions across Europe. Students from the UK, Hungary, Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium and Romania took part in this two-week programme.

York St John students Hannah Chisem, Jack Bass, Jessica Potts, Rachel Ryder and Tom Jolly took part. One said: “This was a superb opportunity to integrate with students across Europe, and learn more about other cultures and learning styles. We’ve learnt more about our skills and abilities, and feel much more confident about our future career and studies."

The purpose of this Intensive Programme was to develop a training manual for European companies about Value Driven Management within small and medium organisations. The students led the development of a website, a resource for managers and employers about the management theory. They had also interviewed local business leaders from a range of York-based organisation before travelling to Belgium. Findings were presented to teaching staff and local dignitaries on the final day of the trip.

Dr Stefanos Nachmias, Senior Lecturer in Business Management at York St John Business School, said: “Our students received excellent feedback and commendations about the quality of their work. They were committed, worked diligently and were superb ambassadors for York St John Business School.“

Brendan Paddison, Lecturer in Business Management at York St John Business School, the project leader also commented on the students’ experience. He said: “They generated new ideas and gained a European perspective to their management thinking. The students excelled in terms of the work they produced while also demonstrating and developing skills in leadership, teamwork and intercultural exchange; experiences which will be invaluable for future study and career paths.”
